Selection criteria for custom steel wire rope and tailor-made steel cable solutions
Various factors need to be taken into account when developing your customised rope solution:
External influences: What external influences such as temperature, moisture or dirt affect the rope?
Breaking load and forces: What forces does the rope or strand have to withstand?
Surface treatment: Are special treatments such as cleaning, hammering or greasing required to achieve optimum performance?
Fabrication and terminations: What terminations are required? Are there any special requirements such as a cage loop or customised terminations?
1. rope construction and structure
Components:
The central part of the rope, the rope core, consists of either a steel core or fiber cores. The strands are the outer strands that surround the rope around the core. They are made up of twisted wire bundles that transmit the tensile force of the rope.
Influencing factors:
Whether the rope is designed to be used for tensile forces, bending forces or lifting applications influences the construction.
The rope construction determines whether the breaking force and tensile strength correspond to the load requirement (more strands = higher strength).
The number of wires per strand and the direction of lay (right or left) influence the flexibility and pliability of the rope.

Components:
Metal wires made of steel, stainless steel, galvanised steel, copper or special alloys such as Monel, Inconel, titanium, Nitinol, etc.
Sheathing made of nylon, FEP, PTFE or other plastics.
Influencing factors:
Ropes used in harsh environments such as seawater or chemicals require materials with high corrosion resistance such as stainless steel or special alloys to withstand the environmental conditions.
At extreme temperatures, materials such as Inconel or tungsten are more suitable.
To increase the service life, coated ropes or hammered surfaces can be selected to increase abrasion resistance.

Components:
The rope diameter (between 0.09 mm and 8.00 mm for Carl Stahl Technocables) influences the load capacity and flexibility.
Influencing factors:
A larger diameter increases the breaking strength, but reduces the flexibility.
Tight installation space specifications or special machine designs may require a smaller diameter.
A larger rope also has a higher weight, which can be a limiting factor in certain applications.
